Rental returns exceed average wage

Landlords earn double the average UK wage through their rental income, new research suggests.

Rental returns exceed average wage

Figures from BRDC Continental show that the average landlord may receive almost £60,000 income from their rental properties, over double the national average pay of £27,174. The average landlord’s portfolio contains eight or nine properties with a total value of £1.2 million.

The research, undertaken on behalf of BM Solutions, also found that the average rental yield grew to 6.2 per cent across the UK throughout the last quarter, with the highest returns coming from the East Midlands and Wales, with both regions reaching returns of 6.7 per cent. With already high yields continuing to grow, it is unsurprising that landlords were found to be increasingly confident about the sector’s long term prospects, with 61 per cent feeling positive about the year ahead in comparison to last years 54 per cent.

Head of BM Solutions, Phil Rickards, said: ‘It's easy to see why people are attracted to the buy-to-let market; it offers a tangible investment which can provide the long-term returns that some other assets won't. For those people considering the opportunities that this market presents it is however important to understand the financial and legal commitments being a landlord brings and to ensure that you undertake the right level of research and due diligence to increase your chances of success.’
