House buyers raced to snap up a flat on the market for under £100,000, a rarity in London with the average house price now above half a million.

But the potential inhabitant will have to put up with compact living for the bargain - as the property measures just 206 sq feet.

The “bijou” flat, in Ambleside Avenue, Streatham, includes a bed which has to be accessed with a ladder. There is also a bathroom, entrance hall, and a kitchen area with only enough space for a microwave.

The lower price meant it was immediately snapped up by a landlord who plans to rent it out.

A description on property website Rightmove said: “The property is presented tidily but would benefit from updating in parts.

“The flat is located on the corner of Babington Road and Ambleside Avenue, giving the incoming purchaser access to many of Streatham’s amenities which are within close proximity.”

Phil Quinnell, estate agent, said: “If you are a single individual and prefer to live on your own than houseshare, you could rent here for around £500 a month. It is comfortable for someone to live by themselves and in a good location.”

Micro-flat: there is a kitchen space although it appears only enough room for a microwave for cooking (Picture: Rightmove) He said the flat was purchased by the previous owner for £75,000 in 2006.

Other one bed properties in the area advertised on Rightmove currently range from £300,000 to £400,000.

Recent figures have shown the cheapest average price for a house in the capital is more than £250,000.

However, experts have suggested the market is cooling with London prices expected to rise by only 1% over the year to come.
