Portugal property: Looking to retire in the Algarve? Estate agents name best locations

PORTUGAL is the perfect spot to buy a property and enjoy a more relaxed way of life. But where is the best spot to buy a home? Estate agents in the Algarve have shared their hotspots.

Buying a property abroad may sound risky during the coronavirus pandemic. However, for those looking to retire or move abroad, sunny Portugal could be a great option. If bustling Lisbon and arty Bilbao don’t appeal to you, then a sunny home in Portugal’s famed Algarve might be a more peaceful alternative.

The Algarve is lucky enough to have a mild climate all year round with sun at least 300 days a year.

With sea, mountains and cities, the region has a lot to offer British expats.


According to the estate agent, the region has been “highlighted for several years as being one of the top destinations to spend retirement in”.


The Algarve has sixteen counties which all have desirable characteristics.

This means it’s possible for you to cross the region from one end to the other easily.

The estate agent said: “Any city in the Algarve is a great place to live in and have an active life during retirement.

“We have put together some suggestions from the western part of the Algarve, where more expats decide to live.”

Lagos
Lagos is home to around 31,000 inhabitants who are divided into four parishes.

The city is bustling with people of all age groups and has several award-winning beaches.


The best known are D. Ana beach and Meia Praia beach which is known for its long stretch of sand - great for families with children.

The estate agent added: “The typical gastronomy, rich in recipes linked to the sea, is present in several restaurants in the city.

“Lagos is also known for its resorts with privileged locations where it is possible to buy a flat and live as if you were on holiday all year round."

Luz village
This parish is more tranquil and is known for its idyllic landscapes overlooking the stunning coastline.

Many expats have moved to Luz for a more simple lifestyle.

The village has a church, municipal market and picturesque houses.

The Portugal property expert added: “Here you'll find several fragments that link tradition with luxury tourism, present in the Luz resorts.

“The Luz village has all amenities such as supermarkets, post office, banks, school and is a 10-minute away drive from Lagos city centre.”

Portimão
This is one of the busiest and more urban centres of the Algarve which is also home the famous Rocha beach.

The area is popular with tourists and has plenty of cultural places, making it a perfect spot for art fans.

Alvor
Alvor is a small parish in Portimão which has strong ties to the sea through fishermen and shellfish gatherers.

The village is home to a large expat community made up of mainly British, German and Dutch individuals.

The Algarve estate agent said the village is extremely friendly and has a beautiful beaches.

They added: “Don't be surprised if in the middle of the street you hear a ‘Bom dia’ (good morning) from someone you don't know as you can reciprocate and easily win lifelong friends.

“Alvor beach has a long stretch of sand and calm sea with several beach bars spread over its six kilometres.”
